CASTLES & TOWERS

The castles and the Tower of the Municipality of Igoumenitsa create a fascinating journey through the long history of Thesprotia. In the heart of the city, the **Castle of Igoumenitsa** commands the pine-covered hill above the modern settlement, on the site of an older fortification, likely from the late Roman period, while its walls and rectangular towers bear witness to the successive Venetian and Ottoman periods that marked the region. Further south, the impressive **Castle of Margariti**, built by the Ottomans around 1549 to protect the hinterland against Venetian possessions, still preserves parts of its strong walls and towers, transporting the visitor to the military conflicts and political realignments of the 16th and 17th centuries. Completing this historical tour is the **Tower of Ragiou**, an Ottoman tower from the 19th century, built on the summit of a verdant hill in the Ragiou-Kestrini plain, within an archaeological site with traces of human presence from the Middle Palaeolithic era to the Ottoman period, offering a unique journey through time and the natural landscape of the region.
