Description

Saint Athanasius Perdikas is considered one of the most miraculous monasteries in Thesprotia. The Monastery of Agios Athanasios was originally built on the slope of a mountain (Kasteli), while from 1811 it was moved to its current location. The move was deemed an urgent necessity, as according to tradition, the icon of the Saint would leave its original site during the night, and the locals would find it in the morning on an old olive tree (which is still intact at the monastery). Pilgrims pass through the hollow of the olive tree three times, and locals mainly invoke the Saint's name in both life's difficulties and ease. His miracles are numerous and undeniable. It is officially celebrated on May 2nd, when there is a large turnout and a beautiful festival is set up.
