Description

The Margariti Castle, Built on a low hill south of the settlement, it is one of the important historical attractions of Thesprotia and is directly connected to the turbulent history of the region from the 16th century to the early 20th century. It was constructed around 1549 by the Ottomans for defence against Venetian possessions, was destroyed in 1571 and later repaired, maintaining a strategic role for centuries. Its current form, the result of later as well as recent restoration interventions, presents the characteristics of a fortified military residence with an inner courtyard, strong walls, towers, cisterns, a bathhouse and auxiliary spaces. Access is via an easy and short path, while from its ramparts, visitors enjoy a beautiful view of the Margariti plain. The prospective visitor can continue exploring the charming alleyways of the village and dine in one of the tavernas offering delicious food.
